The program, established in 1964, recognizes and honors distinguished high school seniors for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education. Jack is one of only 5,000 students nationwide – out of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate this year – who qualified as a candidate for this prestigious program. Students must perform exceptionally well on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or receive a nomination from their state’s education commissioner.
Later this year, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will review the candidates and select one male and one female from each state as a 2023 Presidential Scholar. According to the program’s website, selections are based on “students’ academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.”
