St. Luke’s Upper School students were recognized for outstanding academic, service, leadership, art, athletic, and character-driven accomplishments at the 2023 Upper School Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 17. Students, families, faculty, and staff filled the Seldin Performing Arts Center while others joined via livestream to celebrate. (Watch the livestream recording here.)

Head of Upper School Liz Perry opened up the evening by sharing her gratitude for the teachers, advisors, and class deans. “You truly go above and beyond for all your students — not just for the small number we will recognize tonight with awards, but for every student in your care,” she said. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

The awards were presented by Class Deans Emily Allen, Dave Burnham, and John Higgins; Assistant Head of Upper School Mary Frederick; Head of Upper School Liz Perry; and Head of School Mary Halpin Carter.

During the ceremony, Dr. Carter also announced Jack Sullivan as the Class of 2023 salutatorian and Ava Sollenne as the valedictorian.

“Over the course of his high school career, Jack has blossomed into a serious scholar,” Carter said. “Across all subject areas, Jack enjoys learning and appreciates a good challenge. In addition to excelling in his school work, he is very active in our Model United Nations Club and prioritizes community service. Confident, poised, and humble, Jack is a model of scholarship and hard work.”

She described Ava as “both academically motivated and community-minded.” “Her incredible record of accomplishment in the classroom is built on a foundation of genuine curiosity,” she added.“She is a strong collaborator; a curious, insightful, and kind person; a quiet but purposeful leader in the classroom and the school. She is a generous classmate who listens intently and thoughtfully to what others have to say. Ava is committed to her own success and also that of the people nearest to her.”

Congratulations to this year’s award recipients!
