Although our spring games and practices are on hold due to Coronavirus precautions, we thought you'd enjoy reading this Girls Varsity Tennis Season Outlook—written before schools were asked to close. It feels good to celebrate our coaches and athletes and think ahead to getting back on the Hilltop.
The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Tennis Team welcomes a number of new players to the squad and hopes to challenge for FAA and New England honors this year.
Co-Head Coaches Tish Tregellas and Brinley Ehlers return to lead the team and believe they have an extremely strong group of players. Ehlers commented: “Tryouts have been very competitive, and we are really excited about the amount of talent in the group. We are always competitive, but we have a deeper roster of players this year and expect to challenge the top teams.”
The FAA league is traditionally very strong, with Greenwich Academy, Rye Country Day, Sacred Heart and Hopkins usually the teams to beat. Ehlers and Tregellas are confident the Storm can break into that group this season. Ehlers said: “The top teams always have one or two marquee players at the top of their line-up, and I think Meredith Macey and Julia DeLuca can be competitive with those high-level players.”
Both Macey and DeLuca join the team for the first time. Tregellas is thrilled to have them on the roster: “Julia is a level four USTA player, which is the highest junior level. Meredith is also a USTA player, who will play in college, so we are really glad she is going to join us her senior year. We are going to be very strong.”
Sadie Vehslage ‘20 and Audrey Magnussen ‘21 captain the Storm, and the coaches believe they have two leaders who will complement each other perfectly. Tregellas said: “Sadie has been on the team since eighth grade, so I think she is really excited to captain. I think she is doing an outstanding job and works well with Audrey.” Ehlers added: “They have been involved in the early stages and communicate really well with us. We anticipate basically a whole new team and look to Sadie and Audrey to help the team bond.”
Girls Varsity Tennis has only four returning players from the team that lost a heartbreaking New England semifinal last year, but Ehlers is confident they can return to claim the title they won three years in a row: “It’s definitely a goal of ours to get back to the New England championship match. We feel really good about what we have done so far and have had great buy-in from the girls. I expect our practices to be super competitive. We can’t wait for the season to get started.”
Tregellas and Ehlers believe the St. Luke’s Girls Tennis Program is in good shape for this season and beyond: “We have a lot of good, young players, such as Layla Magnussen [‘22], Macy Millones [‘23], CC Buono [‘23], Kiley Galvin [‘23], and Kelly Nuener [‘24], so I think the future of St. Luke’s tennis continues to be bright.”
