On Friday, October 18, St. Luke's School proudly welcomed alumna and two-time Paralympic medalist Ali Truwit '18 to kick off the 2024 Homecoming Weekend during the Pep Rally in Carey Gymnasium. Head of School Mary Halpin Carter introduced Ali to the student body, setting the stage for her inspiring message.
Ali shared her remarkable journey, spanning just 15 months — from a life-changing shark attack in May 2023 to achieving medal-winning and record-breaking performances at the Paris Paralympics. Her story serves as a powerful testament to resilience and determination.
In her address, Ali emphasized the importance of hard work and self-belief in achieving one’s goals. She reflected on the values she embraced as a student at St. Luke's, highlighting kindness, inclusivity, a strong work ethic, and leadership.
Ali’s commitment to service is further exemplified through her charity, Stronger Than You Think. After Ali’s attack, she became aware of the high costs associated with prosthetics and the limited insurance coverage available. Her foundation provides financial assistance for prosthetics and promotes water safety, underscoring the critical role swimming played in her survival.
This spirit of service is central to the St. Luke’s community, as reflected at the main entrance: Henry James' quotation in Be Kind Plaza and our motto, "Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve." Ali and her story embody St. Luke's mission — a deep love of learning, a strong moral compass, the commitment to serve, and the confidence to lead — and serve as a shining example for our students and the entire community to embrace these critical values and make a positive impact in the world.
