The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association is excited to welcome you to our 13th annual Book Chat. Led by Susan Doran, winner of the 2024 Edward B. Blakely Distinguished Faculty & Staff Award, and esteemed History teacher Hunter Martin, the discussion will focus on “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy*. This classic novel explores the timeless themes of love, family, and the pursuit of happiness within the constraints of societal expectations. It grapples with questions of faith, doubt, morality, and the search for meaning in a world that often seems chaotic. The book provides a sweeping and insightful portrayal of 19th-century Russia as it undergoes profound social and political changes, including the impact of railroad development and industrialization, as well as the evolving roles of women.

“Anna Karenina” remains a cornerstone of world literature that has been translated into English more than 10 times. Whether you choose the influential translation by Constance Garnett (Susan Doran’s pick) or a more contemporary version, it is sure to be an engrossing, challenging, but rewarding read. We hope you will join us for a fun evening of cocktails and conversation that offers a unique opportunity to experience the level of discourse your children engage in at St. Luke’s. Reading the book is not a requirement to participate, but we hope you will grab a copy and sign up today!

We encourage you to register early. Please email Julia Uzgiris or Carrie Deane Corcoran with any questions.
