Students Discover the French-Speaking World During National French Week

S.A.
Last week, St. Luke’s World Language Department celebrated National French Week—Venez découvrir le monde Francophone! Come discover the French-speaking world!

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to explore Francophone culture, including music genres from around the world. (You can listen to the playlists created on Spotify and YouTube.) They tasted French cuisine from a special lunch menu, enjoyed fresh crêpes made by Mademoiselle Briggs and the Flik team, and discovered the importance (and growing influence) of the French language through information posters and library book displays. Students chalked fun idiomatic expressions in French on the Be Kind Plaza. Middle School students attended a presentation with special guest Catherine Simonson Hannon ‘10, who shared how her understanding of the French language has helped her advance professionally and enriched her life personally. Upper School students heard Hannon speak during the Center for Leadership’s Lunch & Lead last week.

World Language Department Chair Jon Shee shared: “As the number of primary and secondary speakers of French continues to grow significantly worldwide, we find it so important to share interesting cultural elements from the Francophone world with our St. Luke’s community. It is a delight to see students — including those who don’t currently study French—engage with original, informative content that has been created for this event by their SLS peers.”
