There is a real buzz around the St. Luke’s Baseball team this spring with great energy and team camaraderie at the forefront.
Much of the squad traveled to Florida for spring training at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and, according to head coach Anthony Conte, much of the team chemistry was built there: “Florida was awesome. I would say it was the best trip we have ever had as a team. The leadership and the atmosphere of our upperclassmen was fantastic. They went down there a bunch of boys and came back a family.”
Conte, who is serving his third year as head coach of the team, hopes the relationships that were formed will serve the team well throughout the season: “The whole group has been great, it’s really just one unit. Our seniors have done such a good job but everyone is working well as a group and there is a really special bond between them. We are looking to take this energy into the season.”
This year’s squad will be led by senior captains Juan Velez, Colin Meany and Quentin Andersen and the coaching staff has been extremely impressed with the leadership shown by all three. Assistant coach Chris Mantz said; “We really didn’t have to say anything this preseason. The senior leaders were fantastic and they took things upon themselves. They got a lot of the guys out on the field prior to preseason—which is great.”
Despite dropping its opening two games against The Millbrook School and The Brunswick School, Conte is looking for his team to bounce back immediately when they take on The King School on Friday 4/7. “We talked a lot about filling up the tank with positive energy and staying together. We want to be aggressive on base and stay positive and trust the process.”
After a difficult season in 2016, St. Luke’s Baseball team members know the challenges ahead but Conte is confident in his group of players: “We want to beat every team once and really just have fun and have a great experience. We have such a great group of seniors and upperclassmen. I have been telling these guys repeatedly over the last few days that this is your last spring at St. Luke’s, this is going to be the last sport you play at St. Luke’s, so enjoy it. Enjoy it every single day.”
