MS Artwork of the Week: Nick Holmes '21, Griffin Johnson '21
Wulfman
Nick Holmes will be the first to tell you - he's not a painter. He completed our final painting assignment, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it. "Make me a drawing and make it great," I told him. And here is that drawing. See that strong and strident tree, its crown so full of different textures? See the way it floats away on a free piece of land, fortress tucked away behind it, king of its own territory? When Nick draws, sparks might as well fly off the ends of his pencil because the drawing itself, not yet created, is practically exploding with excitement like its birthday is tomorrow, knowing it's about to exist. As the reality looms that we have just a month and a half of school left, I told Nick - please, never stop drawing. Middle schoolers: if you agree with me, clap to show it.
And then there's Griffin Johnson. It's hard to describe the feeling when your student creates something that makes you have to consciously stop, breathe, and blink, because you don't want their head to swell up too big as you tell them what you think of it. You might not know what a wizard Griffin is with a pencil, because he probably hasn't ever told you or shown you. But inside that hand and inside that mind, there is some power. If you look closely at this drawing, you will see snaggle-toothed snakes weaving through and out of the ground, tunnels leading to ancient pyramids, unidentified flying objects, and--what, what's that? Way far away in the sky? Is that...a tree? On a floating island? What a brilliant way to compliment the work of a friend.
You can look at both these masterpieces on display in the hallway right across from Ms. Kaplan's office. Major round of applause for these two gentlemen.
