St. Luke's Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Season Outlook

Although our spring games and practices are on hold due to Coronavirus precautions, we thought you'd enjoy reading this Girls Lacrosse Season Outlook —written before schools were asked to close. It feels good to celebrate our coaches and athletes and think ahead to getting back on the Hilltop. 


The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Lacrosse Program looks to build on the progress it has made during the last couple of years, but will do so under new Head Coach Kathy Drake.

Drake joins the Storm team with a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. Drake graduated with a bachelor’s of science in exercise and sports science from Colorado State University, where she was a four-year starter and lead scorer. She was also named Most Valuable Player her sophomore, junior & senior years.

Coach Drake has spent the past six years as the JV Head Coach at Wilton High School, following three years as the Wilton Varsity Assistant Coach. In addition to her experience at Wilton, Coach Drake serves as the Founder/Director of Ambition Lacrosse Club. She was also Director of the CT Chargers girls lacrosse club and currently serves as the Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Chelsea Piers Connecticut.

Drake has been impressed with what she has seen from her squad during her first few practices: “Our preseason has gotten off to an amazing start. We have had excellent participation and very high energy. Our coaching staff is excited about this group.”

Phoebe Kurth ‘20, Kaleigh Bowler ‘20, and Ryan Weil ‘21 captain the Storm this year, and Drake is thrilled with the start they have made: “The three captains have stood out for their effort, intensity, and leadership. We expect them to be mentors, leaders, and inclusive throughout all levels of our lacrosse program. I want them to be the conduit between the coaching staff and team and to set the bar high in terms of their work ethic, focus, and respect for each other, as well as for our coaches, opponents, and officials.”

Girls lacrosse has some exceptional young talent this year. The new head coach is excited to watch the squad’s youngest members develop and to see how much they can contribute to the program: “We are very excited about the strength of our eighth-grade class, who we expect to contribute on both JV and varsity this year. Izzy Schuh, Lilly Magliacano, Ainsley Glenday, and Tema Wagner have all impressed. We also have Annalise Correia [‘22], Macy Owsley [‘22], Natalie Owsley [‘23], and Sabrina Dusek [‘23], who will be huge players for us.”

As well as the young guns, the Storm welcomes back a number of senior players with valuable experience. Quinn Gregorich ‘20, Victoria Whitcomb ‘20, Aida Nahas ‘20, Abby O’Meara ‘20, Molly Kim ‘21, and Samantha Schwartz ‘21 are all expected to have an impact. Drake looks to them to imprint her style of play: “Every game, I want the team to give a full 50 minutes with hustle, as well as with unselfish and composed team play. We will focus on ball security, thoughtful strategic play, and supporting one another physically and verbally, which starts with our juniors and seniors.”

Drake is excited to get going: “I can’t wait for the season to get underway. Our goals this season are to get better each and every day and to have a positive experience doing so.”
