The St. Luke’s Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team was thrilled to welcome Middlebury College and NCAA All American lacrosse player Erin Nicholas to its weekly Zoom meeting on Tuesday, April 21.
Nicholas, who also plays field hockey for the Panthers, boasts an incredible resume. She has won four NCAA Championships (three field hockey and one lacrosse), as well as been named an All-American field hockey player twice and NCAA Division III Field Hockey Player of the Year twice. As a sophomore, she was named an All-American lacrosse player.
During the Zoom meeting, Erin spoke about her personal college process and the questions she asked herself when deciding whether to go to a Division I or Division III school. She talked about trying to find the right balance between academics, athletics, and social life and also said how she was able to make an impact even as a freshman at Middlebury.
When asked about the single most important skill-building drill she could share with the team, she had no hesitation in recommending wall-ball. She also stressed to the group that her coach emphasizes that the all-important stick skills come from the comfort of having the stick in your hand.
St. Luke’s Head Coach Kathy Drake organized the event and was thrilled her team was able to connect with such an excellent role model: “We are excited to have the opportunity to meet with not only two incredibly accomplished women’s lacrosse players but amazing human beings as role models for our girls. Both Erin and Callie are true examples of well-rounded student athletes that excel both in the classroom and on the field. Erin did an amazing job talking with our girls and I was so glad that she emphasized the importance of stick work as I continue to communicate that point to our players.”
The team is fortunate to have the opportunity to chat with another All-American next week, as Drake has set up a second Zoom meeting with Duke defender Callie Humphrey.
Humphrey made the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll, is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team member and made the ACC Academic Honor Roll three times while at Duke. She has led the Blue Devils squad for the past three years in caused turnovers and ground ball stats.
