Sports Return To The Hilltop

Daniel Clarke
Sports returned to the Hilltop this week with all six fall St. Luke’s varsity programs beginning their preseason workouts on Monday, August 17.

It was the first time in 158 days that our student-athletes and coaches were together in person, and it was wonderful to see our facilities filled once again with over 150 participants.

The main focus was on skill development, including building fitness levels and team bonding, with the Storm coaching staff working diligently to introduce athletes to training exercises that maintain social distance and do not require shared equipment.

St. Luke’s athletics will take a slow and steady approach to build our collective confidence in resocializing through athletics. As an example, our volleyball program practices outdoors on the Class of 2018 turf field, as they await the delivery and installation of two outdoor volleyball courts. Our football program has not been issued helmets or pads and remains non-contact, as do all our sports, at least for the near future.

Athletic Director Mike West was thrilled with how week one went: “The opportunity to get our students back on campus with their peers, with layer upon layer of safety precautions, and engaged in the sports they love, made for a really enjoyable week.”
