Literature of War Poetry Annotation Project
Students in Assistant Head of School for Academics Liz Perry’s Literature of War class created posters with annotations of poems that connect to the themes and texts they have studied this semester.
Working in groups, students examined the poems from every angle, discussing all their features and any connections they could make to the texts and themes of this course. Students also looked at the poem’s technical features (rhyme, meter, line breaks, tone, title, poetic form, speaker, audience, use of imagery, metaphor, and so on).
Once group discussions were complete, students annotated the poem by hand, using words, colors, quotes, symbols, and illustrations.
As Perry shared with the students, “Be messy, cross things out, change your mind.”
Once students completed the annotation posters, they invited faculty and staff to their class to learn more about the poems and their analyses.
The poems studies included:
- “The End and the Beginning” by Wisława Szymborska
- “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen
- “The Names” by Billy Collins
- “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus
- “Ode to a Drone” by Amit Majmudar
