Summer was anything but sleepy here on the Hilltop. The St. Luke’s community buzzed with excitement and pride over one of our alumnae — Ali Truwit, Class of 2018. Ali’s 15-month journey from a shark attack to two record-breaking medals at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris has inspired us here at St. Luke’s. For those who might have missed our coverage of Ali, please enjoy this recap of Ali’s road to victory.
A Record-Breaking Triumph at the Team Trials: This July, Ali headed to Minneapolis to compete for a spot on Team USA at the Paralympics in Paris. Ali’s performance in the pool was one for the books. She solidified her spot on Team USA, breaking an American record in the 100 Back S10 with a time of 1:08:98, marking her first-ever sub-1:09 performance.
Ali Truwit Day: A Community Celebration: The excitement continued as Governor Ned Lamont declared August 28 as Ali Truwit Day, a gesture of recognition for her dedication and talent. In a heartfelt message, Ali expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is an incredible surprise. I am so honored and grateful to be standing next to you two and proud to be heading to Paris to represent the United States.”
A Warm Send-Off: On Friday, August 16, the Town of Darien came together to offer their cheers and encouragement as Ali set off for Paris to represent Team USA. SLS gathered in front of 1020 Post Road, posters and pom poms in hand, to show our support for this inspiring alum and her journey to the games.
Watch Party on the Hilltop: St.Luke’s was beaming with spirit during our first week of classes as we cheered on Ali as she took to the pool in Paris. We hosted two watch parties during lunch to cheer on Ali as she participated in the 400-meter freestyle final and 100-meter Backstroke race. The Forese Family Fireplace Commons was roaring with cheers and excitement for Ali as she broke two American records and secured two silver medals for the United States.
Ali’s story has been a source of immense pride for St. Luke’s. Her story is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished with passion and perseverance.
