On Saturday, November 15 the St. Luke’s varsity football team ended its season on a high note after winning a tightly contested battle against Stamford rival King. It was a chilly and exceptionally windy day at King. From the outset, it was clear that any ball in the air had a mind of its own. Despite the interceptions and short punts that resulted from the wind, the game was certainly a showcase for the talent on both the Storm and the Vikings.
In the first quarter the Vikings had ample opportunity to run up the score but, in what would be a constant theme throughout the game, the Storm’s red zone defense was nearly impenetrable. In the first half the Storm gave up two touchdowns, but also prevented three with stifling goal line defense. The red zone defense was also able to prevent the Vikings from converting any extra points after a touchdown which became crucial in the last moments of the game.
For as good as the Storm defense was throughout the game, the Vikings’ defense was better for most of the first half. Despite good opportunities for the Storm offense, King led 12-0 with less than three minutes to play in the first half. It looked as though that score would carry over into the second half, until quarterback Greg Goldstein ‘17 aired a ball out that connected with wide receiver Omar Fortt ‘17. Using his speed and footwork, Fortt gave the Storm a 54 yard gain that put them just yards away from getting on the scoreboard before the end of the first half. It was only fitting that Goldstein once again connected with Fortt for the touchdown. At the end of the first half the score was 12-6.
It was clear from the start of the second half that Fortt’s touchdown had lit a fire under the Storm. The Storm’s second touchdown came quickly into the second half with another great pass from Greg Goldstein. This time the pass connected with wide receiver Jacob Morgenstern ‘16. Like Fortt, he too was taken down right before the goal line. Justin Brown ‘17 got the touchdown with a run to tie up the score. After the two point conversion, the Storm led 14-12. Morgenstern made another great catch with 3:51 left in the third quarter to put the Storm up 22-12.
While the Storm clearly had the momentum at the end of the first half and throughout the third quarter, the Vikings fought back in the fourth. A touchdown three minutes into the fourth made the score 22-18.The Storm once again managed to stifle the extra point attempt. With the Vikings threatening once again later in the third quarter, the St. Luke’s crowd was anxiously hoping for a Storm stop. Morgenstern delivered once again as he recovered King’s fumble. On that same set of downs, Morgenstern broke loose from his defenders and scored what proved to be the deciding touchdown. The Storm led 28-18 with only 3:41 to play.
As the game came down to the wire, the Viking offense was once again sparked and, after a long sustained drive, managed to score another touchdown to make the score 28-24. With 2:06 left to play, it seemed as though the game was all but over. However, in a desperate attempt to get more points on the board, the Vikings went for an onside kick and, against all odds, managed to recover the ball. The St. Luke’s bench, fans, and the players on the field were understandably deflated, and it looked as though the game might end in heartbreak for the Storm. However, Omar Fortt, the player who had initially stimulated his team in the first half, nabbed an interception with 1:41 to play. The Storm managed to run out the clock and came away with a dramatic win in the last game of the season. The win gave St. Luke’s their fourth victory of the season and ensured that the team finished at a respectable 4-4.
