St. Luke’s Basketball looks to be in great shape with both the Boys and Girls programs heading into the holiday break undefeated this season.
The Boys Varsity team, captained by Walter Whyte ‘17 and Colin Meany ‘17, continued their fine form this weekend with wins against Salisbury (61-44) and Dexter Southfield (79-40) in the Hall of Fame tournament in Springfield, MA.
The victories see the Storm improve to 7-0 following wins against The Hun School, Greens Farms Academy, King, Champlain St. Lambert and Hamden Hall and also means the program closes out 2016 undefeated.
Head Coach Drew Gladstone will continue to put the team through their paces over the break to make sure they are well prepared for their first two games of 2017. The Storm start the new year with an FAA contest against Rye Country Day before Notre Dame Prep from Fitchburg, MA, a team that could prove to be St. Luke’s biggest test to date. Gladstone said, “NDP will be one of our toughest match ups thus far. Right now they are ranked as the #9 postgraduate program in the nation and they have a history of playing the toughest schedule in high school basketball. Our senior leadership has expressed interest in playing nobody but the best and I think that is a mark of a tough, mature team.”
The Girls program has also had a strong start to the campaign taking their record to 6-0 this weekend at the Ethel Walker Holiday Tournament. The Storm beat Cheshire Academy 66-36 before a 79-22 victory over Phillips Exeter put them into the Championship game against the host team. St. Luke’s put in another dominant display and brought another trophy back to the Hilltop defeating Ethel Walker 63-36.
Head Coach Matt Ward was extremely pleased with the way his team performed over the weekend. He said, “We had a ton of fun playing together this weekend. The girls played hard and played together better than we have all season. If we defend with that kind of energy and focus, and move the ball like we did offensively, we will be a tough team to beat.”
Ward knows they have some tough games coming up after the break with Hamden Hall on Wednesday January 4 before another FAA match up against Greens Farms Academy on January 6. He added, “I’m excited to get into league play. I think you hit another level when you are playing against teams you are familiar with. We have a long way to go this season, and need to keep working, but I’m very happy with where we are right now.”
