Stagecraft Class Presents Project-Based Learning Assignment
V. Parker
On January 11 and 12, John Conners’ Stagecraft class, presented various vignettes in the Black Box Theater. Their project-based learning assignment was to interpret a poem through stage design elements. Working in four groups of two students each, they selected poems by Shakespeare, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Edgar Allen Poe to present onstage.
As Conners shared, "As theatre designers we use the elements of our craft (lighting, sound, scenery, and costumes) to support the intention of a playwright or director and meaning of the text. A designer helps provide context, mood, timing, color, and style." He continued, "This project was a microcosm of the greater design process."
After each vignette, the students responsible for that scene answered questions from the audience. Through this course and assignment, the students work on an array of skills including text analysis, visual research, problem-solving, presentation, and critique.
