Maya Klein '18 Hits 1000th Career Point
Dan Clarke
Congratulations to Maya Klein ‘18 who hit her 1000th career point for St. Luke’s on Wednesday, January 25, against The Hopkins School inside the Carey Gymnasium.
The Junior was sixteen points away from the milestone before tip-off but scored fourteen of the Storm’s opening sixteen, to leave her just two points away early in the first half.
The home crowd didn’t have long to wait before celebrating her achievement as McKenna Frank ‘18 found Klein on a breakaway and she finished with an easy lay-up.
As is tradition, Head Coach Matt Ward called a timeout immediately after the bucket so the shooting guard could celebrate with her teammates, coaches and family.
Klein was extremely happy to reach the landmark tally: “I felt really nervous until tip-off but then the nerves just went away. The girls were really looking out for me, I couldn't have done it without them. When I scored the last two points, it felt amazing. I always dreamed about scoring 1000 points when I was in middle school, so it was a great accomplishment for me.”
Ward was also pleased for his player and is hoping for even more from Klein over the remainder of the season and beyond: “Maya has always been a pure shooter, but she has worked so hard and developed into a prolific scorer. She can shoot the three, get to the rim, and hit the mid-range jumper. Also, her defense has improved tremendously. She's a great teammate, leader, and a pleasure to coach. This is a great accomplishment and I think it's just the beginning for her.”
SLS went on to win the game 65-43 and improve their record to 14-1 overall and 5-0 in FAA play. They are back on the court next week with another FAA contest at Sacred Heart School on Tuesday, January 31, before a home game against Cheshire Academy on Thursday, Feb 2.
