Storm Hockey Start The Season Hot

Dan Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey team is enjoying a superb 2016-17 campaign so far passing the midway point of the season with an overall record of 8-2.

The Puck Squad has recorded some excellent victories to this point including a 5-2 win against Stamford High School, a crazy 8-4 triumph over The King School, and a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against The Harvey School on Wednesday, January 26.

Head Coach Corey Gammill has always been confident about this group but even he has been pleasantly surprised: “Coming into the season we knew that we would be very skilled but we didn’t know about the grit of this team. This is a team that has won big at times but has also hung in there in the close games and ended up on top in a number of one-goal games.”

The ‘grit’ Gammill talks about was there for all to see against one of their FAA rivals, Harvey, in the team’s most recent encounter. Luke’s had to dig deep to come back from 3-2 down, late in the game, to win it in OT with a goal from Jack Neafsey ‘19.

The team has been extremely entertaining to watch this year with their first blank score coming in a 2-0 loss to Fairfield Preparatory School on January 20. They scored thirty-seven goals in their ten games with Will Frossell ‘18 and Will Foster ‘17 leading the team in scoring.

Gammill pointed towards the depth of his squad for the offensive threat they pose: “Frossell and Foster are leading the team in scoring and Charlie Whiteley has been a workhorse who we can trust in both zones. Ryan Neafsey and Jack Neafsey are solid second-line players who bring different dynamics on the ice. Ryan is so smart and creative and Jack is willing to be in the mix and shoot the puck. CJ Woodberry  is also such a threat offensively and can change a game at any moment.”

Things look good for St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey and Gammill is confident going into the business end of the season. He added, “Our goal is to win the FAA’s but the highlight for me is the fun these kids have had playing the game. They show up every day to practice and games and they are excited to be together on the ice.”

The St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey team is next in action on Monday, January 30, when they face another FAA rival, The King School, at 3:40pm at Sono Ice House.
