Teachers Present Techniques at Beijing Academic Conference

V. Parker
Academic Technologist Matt Bavone and Ancient World History Teacher Abby Bielski traveled to Beijing last week to present at the OESIS (Online Education Symposium for Independent Schools) Technology Conference. Bavone and Bielski shared some of their teaching techniques which include innovative use of Makerspace technology, using creative software and engaging students in low-tech, hands-on activities. In addition, they demonstrated how to leverage pop culture to maximize student interest in the humanities.

Bielski and Bavone highlighted a handful of their most effective projects including smelting period-accurate coins, using simple 3D printing software to recreate a model of Ancient Rome, programming Mario-like video games inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh, and using social media platforms such as Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram to immerse students in the ancient world.

Before leaving China, Bavone and Bielski made a quick trip to see the Great Wall of China, adding a cultural layer to their professional development experience.
