Varsity Softball Downs King To Reach FAA Final

Dan Clarke
St. Luke’s Varsity Softball team advanced to the FAA final following a 14-6 win over the King School on Wednesday, May 18.

In an extremely entertaining game, the Vikings came out swinging and took a three-run lead in the top of the first inning. However, the Storm would respond immediately in the bottom of the first scoring four runs of their own.

In the top of the second, King would add another two runs to take the lead again at 5-4. However, Luke’s enjoyed another four-run inning to swing the game back in their favor at 8-5 following a double by Noelle Rushil ‘18, a double by Courteney Newman ‘18, and a single by Kristen Beaumonte ‘18.

The Vikings scored one more run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 8-6, but that was as close as they came to a comeback. SLS added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their advantage to 11-6 and they continued to hit the ball well scoring another three in the fifth inning.

The #2 seed Storm closed the game out with some excellent pitching from Riley Page ‘19 who went seven innings, surrendering six runs, eight hits, and striking out five.

The win sets up an intriguing matchup with #1 seed, Hopkins School, in Friday’s championship game at 4pm in New Haven.

Head Coach Troy Haynie said after the game: “I knew we would have to hit well today and we did. I have been saying all week that King would score some runs and we would need to make sure we were on our game. We are looking forward to Friday’s matchup against Hopkins.”
