The Cum Laude Society was founded in 1906 and modeled on Phi Beta Kappa at the collegiate level. Dr. Abram W. Harris, Director of the Tome School in Maryland at that time, founded the Cum Laude Society to honor scholastic achievement of students in secondary schools. Seven schools were given founding charters, and more than 350 schools are charter members today. The Cum Laude Society’s motto, Arete, Dike, Time, translates from Greek to Excellence, Justice, Honor.
Head of Upper School Liz Perry shared with the students: “Today, we celebrate that gift of education. We celebrate your process of living, forever entwined with your process of learning. When you return to the Hilltop as alums – whether that’s this summer or years from now – I know I speak for all your teachers when I say that we cannot wait to hear about the new things you’ll be learning. Thank you for allowing us to accompany you on your journey.”
St. Luke’s Cum Laude Society Committee members are:
Liz Perry, Head of Upper School and Cum Laude Chapter President Jim Yavenditti, Director of Studies and Cum Laude Chapter Secretary Susan Doran, English Teacher and Junior Class Dean Mitch Murphy, History Teacher Jason Warner, Science Teacher
