Feminism Club: Getting to Know Dr. Carter

Kate Parker-Burgard, Director of the Center for Leadership
The St. Luke's Feminism Club recently hosted Dr. Mary Carter, St. Luke's first female Head of School. Feminism Club Co-President, Cessa Lewis '23 facilitated the discussion.

Cessa shared, "Getting a glimpse into Dr. Carter's life was a blast! She was honest, open, and so funny. I bombarded her with questions on topics that varied from feminism to embarrassing stories to her favorite ice cream flavor. She didn't flinch once — she's a pro! I couldn't help but notice that the qualities she most admired in her favorite bosses and her head of school when she was in high school are the qualities she emulates in her role today. I also learned that Dr. Carter once had a blueberry farm.”

Ninth-grader Olivia Tate added her takeaways from the conversation: "Dr. Carter spoke to us about how others helped her find what she wanted to do in life. She also discussed how her friends and former boss had given her advice. Her presence fills the room, and her confidence and ability to command a space while still connecting with each of us was inspirational. Listening to her speak helped me to realize that being female does not change the way one takes control of situations."

Thank you to Dr. Carter for sharing her stories and helping the Feminism Club kick off the academic year with a fantastic student event.
