St. Luke's School Students Shine at Young Artist Exhibit

A group of six St. Luke's School seniors had the incredible honor of having their artwork on display at the Katonah Museum of Art’s 41st annual “Young Artists” exhibition. The exhibit featured 365 works created by high school seniors from forty-three schools across Fairfield, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties. 

 

St. Luke's School proudly contributed six outstanding artworks to this year's exhibition, providing our students the opportunity to let their work shine on a platform that recognizes and fosters the next generation of creative thinkers and artists. 

Jeorge Yankura, St. Luke’s Upper School Art Teacher, shared advice with students before they submitted their work for consideration. 

“I tell them that it takes great courage to submit their work out into the world to an audience who does not know them personally,” Yankura said. “Their work must stand on its own; once it is released into the world, it is open to interpretation and understanding by all who witness it. Strong work maintains its ability to communicate the intended message or overall meaning despite the personal interpretations of many others.” 

Senior Megan Case submitted an abstract image, “Flow,” featuring the ethereal marks and patterns that water leaves on sand.   “Abstract photos like “Flow” allow me to break away from the traditional visual narrative,” Case said.“They require my viewers to take a step closer to see the intricate details that often go unnoticed. The longer you look at the photograph, the more rewarded you are.” 

For many students, this was the first time their artwork was displayed off the Hilltop. Senior Jamie Supe attended the exhibit on opening day. 

“Seeing my piece alongside countless other beautiful and unique works made me realize how talented this generation is,” Supe said.“I also saw many friends (and their artworks) that I didn't know were in the exhibition! It was fun reconnecting with these people while bonding over our shared passion; art truly unites everyone.”

Senior Charlie Lukens shared about the experience. “It is always awesome when I can go to an exhibit where my photography is being shown. It truly makes all the work, both inside and outside of class, so worthwhile.”
