A Season to Remember: Camdyn Nelson Named Gatorade Connecticut Girls Basketball Player of the Year

St. Luke’s School is thrilled to announce that senior guard and team captain Camdyn Nelson has been named the 2024–25 Gatorade Connecticut Girls Basketball Player of the Year, one of the most prestigious honors in high school sports.

This award recognizes not only outstanding athletic achievement but also academic excellence and exemplary character. Camdyn embodies the full spirit of the Gatorade award, and we couldn’t be more proud.

A Multi-Sport Standout with a Winning Legacy

Camdyn’s final basketball season at St. Luke’s was nothing short of spectacular. A fierce competitor and natural leader, she averaged 17.2 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2.7 steals per game, while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc. Her ability to take over a game—or elevate everyone around her—made her one of the most dynamic players in the region.

She led the Storm to the NEPSAC Class B Championship game, earned NEPSAC Class B Player of the Year honors for both 2023–24 and 2024–25, and was named MVP of the 62nd JCC Schoolgirl Classic. In January 2025, she reached a major career milestone by scoring her 1,000th point.

Camdyn is also a 2-time FAA Champion, a 3-time FAA All-League First Team selection, and helped St. Luke’s reach the FAA Finals every year of her high school career. She previously helped the team win the 2022–23 NEPSAC Class B title.

Camdyn joined the SLS Varsity Basketball team as a freshman and was named team captain her junior year—a role she’s embraced with passion and poise. Her leadership has shaped a program defined by unity, accountability, and competitive fire.

Her talent has earned national recognition: Camdyn is ranked #91 in the Class of 2025 by 247Sports and, after fielding offers from several top Division I programs across the country, she committed to play at Syracuse University. Next year, she’ll compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference, where she’ll face off against her older sister Mackenzie Nelson, a former Gatorade Player of the Year and current standout at Virginia Tech.

While basketball is her primary athletic focus, Camdyn is also a key contributor to the varsity girls soccer team, where she has played as an attacking midfielder since her freshman year. Her contributions helped the team win the FAA Regular Season and make two appearances in the NEPSAC Finals.

Additionally, Cam has played AAU basketball for the Empire State Blue Flames since third grade, earning Select 40 First Team honors, and has consistently competed at the highest level throughout her career.

Excellence in the Classroom and Community

Camdyn’s accomplishments extend far beyond athletics. She maintains a B+ GPA while excelling in a rigorous course load that includes calculus, anatomy & physiology, ceramics, creative writing, and graphic design through Global Online Academy. Her academic talents were recognized with the St. Luke’s Math Award in 2023.

Off the court, Camdyn is a committed leader and changemaker. Since 9th grade, she has been active in the St. Luke’s Midnight Run Club, organizing clothing and food drives for local homeless shelters. She also volunteers at the Greenwich YMCA’s children’s program, and runs her own basketball training program for youth players, mentoring the next generation of student-athletes.

After her cousin Peyton was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Camdyn and her family founded Kids Know Best, a nonprofit organization that supports the siblings of children battling cancer—an often-overlooked group navigating their own challenges.

Looking Ahead

Camdyn’s next chapter begins at Syracuse University, where she will compete at the highest level of college basketball while continuing to grow as a leader and scholar. She hopes to remain involved in basketball long-term, possibly through sports medicine or broadcasting—two fields where her passion and insight would shine.

“Camdyn is the kind of student-athlete who makes an entire community proud,” said St. Luke’s athletic director, Anna Knechtel. “She’s a brilliant competitor, a generous spirit, and a role model for what’s possible when you give your all.”

Congratulations, Camdyn! Your journey has inspired us all. The entire Storm community celebrates your achievements—on the court, in the classroom, and in life. We can’t wait to see what comes next.
