SLS Students’ Growing Service Work

VGP
From Middle School science teacher David Havens:

Mary Zech ‘17 and Marco Volpitta ‘20 recently delivered the first—of what we hope to be many—vertical gardens to one of our neighbor schools. After we displayed our design at the MarcUS For Change Day 2015 in Stamford on September 20, Cloonan School Middle School in Stamford was the first school to ask for and receive one of our fully planted vertical gardens.

We met with Cloonan School’s Vice Principal, Laureen Modyand talked about ways the garden can add to their education program.  They may use the garden to help their students with autism as gardening is found to be an effective therapy for autistic children. We offered to go back to help them plant a winter crop next month.

The garden's current design has a six square foot footprint, but contains twenty square feet of growing space. Mary and Marco are currently working on a new design that may double the growing space in an eight square foot footprint.
