Students Raise Nearly $30K for Relay for Life

S.A.
Throughout the school year, St. Luke’s Upper School students and Upper School Science Teacher Dr. John Higgins raised funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Danbury. Meeting weekly, this group of students carefully planned and launched various fundraisers and activities to engage the SLS community in an effort to reach the goal of raising $10,000 and sign up as many people as possible to walk at the Relay for Life event on May 4.

From penny wars and bake sales to a Chiptole give-back night and the famous Doc Tape (see video here), St. Luke’s community came together and surpassed its goal, raising an incredible $28,995 for the American Cancer Society — 50 percent of the total raised at the Danbury event! This significant contribution will make a real difference in the fight against cancer, a testament to the power of our collective efforts and commitment to service.

On May 4, 75 SLS community members participated in the Relay for Life, walking 345 laps, equalling 138 miles. Shoutouts go to Rydan Olson ‘25 and Sasha Caplan ‘27, who each walked more than 30 laps, totaling 26 miles, and Ally Shulman ‘25, who raised nearly $9,000 — more than any other team.

“I am in awe of what this dedicated group of students accomplished,” said Higgins. “Each member has a huge servant's heart and stepped into leadership confidently with creativity, innovation, integrity, and inspiration. I received many compliments from other teams about how respectful and kind our students were. I am beyond proud!”

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Relay for Life 2023 a tremendous success!
