Memories Made At Homecoming 2015
Saturday October 17 saw a perfect fall day dawn on the Hilltop for Homecoming 2015. It was a bright Homecoming on the Hilltop blessed with a fantastic turnout and high spirits. St. Luke’s radio station, WSLX, started things off with a live broadcast that ran throughout the day thanks to guest deejays Peter Bush Swanberg ’73, Dan Mecca ‘81, and engineer Ed Butler.
By mid-morning, Homecoming was bustling with the 5K Fun Run and Middle School Mystery Box Challenge organized by MS Science Chair Susan Bralower. This year's theme for the Mystery Box Challenge was "How Slow Can You Go?" Students were provided the materials to build a pinewood derby car and allowed to "shop" for materials to modify and trick out their car during the one hour challenge. Seventy-five Middle School students on 22 teams endeavored to customize their vehicles to roll down the track as slow as possible. The winning team was the "Storm" consisting of 5th graders P Etergino, G Stuart, A Holtzappfel and F Partington.
The fun kept going at the activity carnival run by various grades and student organizations. They offered games, tasty fare and obstacle courses designed to challenge the most adventurous individuals. Complimenting the Activity Carnival's treat offerings was the first Homecoming Food Truck Festival thanks to Bodega, Firehouse Grill, The Pizza Truck Co., and Melt.
Between the girls and boys varsity soccer contests, the formal dedication for Bucci Baseball Diamond at the Class of 2015 Field took place. A standing room only crowd witnessed the sign unveiling and exuberant gratitude to the project's donors, and Emil Bucci for his years of service to the SLS baseball program.
The sporting events added even more energy to the day. There were two thrilling victories when Varsity Girls Soccer defeated Holy Child 4-2 and Varsity Field Hockey took Cheshire Academy 4-0. Varsity Boys Soccer made a valiant effort but lost 4-0 to Rye Country Day, Varsity Volleyball left everything they had out on the court but fell in straight sets to Convent of the Sacred Heart, and Varsity Football came up just short against Williston Northampton.
The long, exciting day wrapped with the well-attended Upper School Homecoming Dance and All Classes Alumni Reunion at Burger Bar & Bistro in South Norwalk. Director of Alumni Affairs, David Hirx said, “we could not have been more fortunate with the great weather and great enthusiasm all over the Hilltop. Alumni returning were impressed with the student turnout and how the school has grown.”
