On Tuesday, the Center for Leadership hosted St. Luke’s 5th annual Service Symposium which is designed to educate and inspire the community in their service. The Symposium was largely coordinated by CFL summer interns Kristen Beaumonte '18 and Kelly McKenna '17. This year, the Symposium was kicked off by our keynote speaker, Margot Stluka '09 who spoke about how being at St. Luke's got her hooked on service. Stluka has remained passionate about service through college and now works as a critical care nurse where she absolutely loves helping people every day. Her enthusiasm for service was infectious and many students found her presentation to be the best part of the day. "I loved the passion that she had for her job, and she sounded like a very kind and influential person," said one student. Another noted, she was "very good and interesting. She inspired me and made me want to do some of the things she talked about!"
After lunch, students attended some student-led discussions followed by workshops with nonprofit organizations. Thirty different organizations were represented on campus including Kids Helping Kids, Inspirica, Mercy Center, CT Food Bank, Fallen Patriots, Domus, Maritime Aquarium, Ridgefield Boys and Girls Club, Sexual Assault Crisis Center, Volunteer Square, Fund for Women and Girls, Stepping Stones, The First Tee, Waterside, Woodcock Nature Center and Waveny Care.
Many students came away from the day feeling inspired to get involved with organizations or thinking about different situations that they want to change. Students interested in information about service are always welcome to come to the Center for Leadership for more resources and ideas.
