The Girls Varsity Basketball Team Defeated the Westhill Vikings 60-48.
The St. Luke’s girls varsity basketball team is off to a promising start. In the first two regular season games, the Storm have come away with back to back wins. On December 15, the Storm travelled to Stamford to face off against the Westhill Vikings.
At first, the game seemed like it was destined to be an incredibly tight contest. In the first quarter the Storm and the Vikings looked evenly matched. It was clear that both teams were looking for consistency, as both squads struggled to maintain possession and set up its respective offensive strategies. By the end of the low-scoring first quarter, the game was tied at 11-11.
The short intermission that led into the second quarter proved to be instrumental for the Storm. From the outset of the quarter, St. Luke’s looked like a drastically different team. The team began to click both offensively and defensively. Guard Sydney Lowery ‘17, who finished the game with an impressive 33 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds, caught fire and opened up the floor for the rest of the team. Maya Klein ‘18 capitalized on looks from the outside (She finished the game with 5 points and 5 rebounds), while Bridget Dalton ‘18 converted offensive rebounds for a total of 5 points. Off the bench, freshman center Sydney Cummings was a presence under the basket, as she effectively boxed out her opponents and gave the Storm ample opportunities for second chance baskets and fast break opportunities. By the end of the first half, the Storm were up 28-18, allowing only 7 points the entire second quarter.
The third quarter was much like the second for the Storm, except St. Luke’s began to exert more defensive pressure on the Vikings. There were many instances where the Storm shut down the Vikings at the half court line, which led to turnovers and eventual field goals for St. Luke’s. Phenomenal outside shooting from 8th grader guard Janelle Johnson ‘20, who racked up six points in the game, and effective ball handling and passing from Tamia Fulton ‘19, helped expand the Storm’s lead to 47-30 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
At the beginning of the 4th quarter it looked as though the Storm had all but won the game. However, the members of the team, perhaps because of their large lead, seemed to lose focus. In the first four minutes of the quarter, the Storm gave up more than a couple of turnovers, and let the Vikings dominate the post. In the last four minutes of the game, the St. Luke’s players regained their composure and finished the contest at peak form. The final score was 60-48. The team looks to continue its winning streak at an away tournament at Kingswood Oxford from December 18 through December 20.
