In their first game of 2017, the Boys Varsity Basketball team came out on fire against Rye Country Day hitting twenty (20) three-pointers in a comfortable win. Rye’s defense was determined to take away the Storm's ability to attack the rim but St. Luke’s was happy to adjust. Six different players hit from beyond the arc and five racked up double-digit points.
Saturday’s much-anticipated game against New England powerhouse Notre Dame Prep (MA) was, unfortunately, cancelled due to the weather.
Next up for BVBB is another road trip to Greenwich on Thursday January 12th where they face Brunswick for the first time this season at 5pm.
The St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey team began the new year with a thrilling 8-4 win against longtime rival King on Wednesday, January 4th at Stamford Twin Rinks. Will Frossell ’18 led the offense with a hat-trick with Captain Will Foster ’17 adding a goal of his own. CJ Woodberry ‘19 and brothers, Charlie ’17 and Brendan Whiteley ’18, added to the goal count, while George Fox ’19 scored on an empty net after an unselfish assist by Will Pond ‘18. Between the pipes, Evan Ruschil ’18 made a season-high forty-five saves.
The Storm continued their fine form on Friday, January 6th with a convincing 3-0 victory against Fieldston at home. The SLS offense produced over 30 shots on goal converting the three thanks to Frossell ’18, who scored two goals early in the first period, and Foster ’17 who rounded things off in the third. Ruschil ’18 had his first shutout of the season.
Next up for the puck squad is a 3.40pm home game at Sono Ice House on Wednesday, January 11th against The Harvey School.
Girls Varsity squash began 2017 with a bang on Monday as they started off the new year against FAA powerhouse Greenwich Academy. There was a lot of high quality squash on show from both teams but, despite some extremely close contests, the Storm would fall to their local rival. The Highlight of the day was a thrilling encounter between the two #1 seeds which saw Caroline Pellegrino ‘21 come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
Next up: The girls are back in action on Thursday January 12th when they face Rye Country Day at SLS at 3.45pm.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team worked hard throughout the break to prepare for their first set of FAA contests. The Storm went straight into action on Wednesday with a home game against Hamden Hall. The girls came out flying with a 67-31 win with twelve different players scoring on the day.
There was little rest for GVBB before their Friday matchup vs Greens Farms Academy, again at SLS. In a scrappy first half, with both teams competing ferociously, Luke’s found a 37-20 lead after the first period. The Storm settled down in the second half and with three girls getting into double digits (Sydney Lowery 18, McKenna Frank 18, and Maya Klein 12) GVBB came away with a 71-52 victory.
In their third FAA contest in less than a week St. Luke’s extended their unbeaten run to 9-0 with a comfortable win over Holy Child 56-34 on Monday afternoon at SLS.
Next up: The Varsity Squad now hit the road with three away games against Masters School on Wednesday January 11, King School on Friday January 13th and St Mary’s (NY) at Harry Truman High School in the ‘Say Yes To Success’ Showcase on Sunday January 15th.
The St. Luke’s Ski team enjoyed their first race of the season at Mount Southington on Thursday January 5th. Despite low snow accumulations conditions were good and the team competed very well in both the boys and girls races. Andrew Kurth ‘18 finished 10th overall for the boys, 2nd in his conference, and Phoebe Kurth ‘20 came in 5th overall on the girls side.
Next up: The Varsity squad are back on the slopes on Thursday January 12 for their second race at Mount Southington. The action gets under way at 4pm.
