St. Luke's Squash Split Close Contests

Dan Clarke
The Squash courts have been busy at St. Luke’s this week with doubleheaders on Monday, 1/30 and Wednesday, 2/1.

The Boys started the week off as both JV and Varsity squads were in action against local rival  New Canaan High School.

The JV team posted their second consecutive victory and pushed their overall record to 3-2 with a comfortable 5-2 win. The Storm proved to be the deeper of the two squads winning at positions 3-7. Andrew Gray '21 almost tallied a 6th point for the team when he battled all the way in the #1 match, eventually falling 11-8 in the fifth.

The Varsity squad took to the court soon after and, despite wins for Dennis Polyakov '18, Andrew Patty '19, and Liam Patty '21, would lose an extremely tight contest 3-4.
Liam Patty was particularly impressive on the evening as he had to withstand a barrage of powerful drives that often had him scrambling in the back of the court.

BVS was back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they entertained FAA powerhouse Rye Country Day School and, despite some hard-fought matches, Polyakov would pick up the only point of the match for St. Luke’s as the Wildcats won 6-1.
Liam Patty would again show his grit and determination losing an epic match against his senior opponent 2-3.

The Girls Varsity Squad followed the boys on to court and had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout a gripping 4-3 win. The victory sees them improve to 5-3 overall.

The Storm got off to a great start, winning three of the first four games, as co-captain Caroline Nevin ‘18, Kendall Boege ‘19 and Pamela Jaramillo ‘19 gave them a 3-1 advantage.

However, the visitors found a way to claw their way back to level things at 3-3 with just the #1 matchup left on-court. In a gripping finale, Caroline Pellegrino ‘21 played some wonderful squash on her way to winning the contest 3-1 to seal the victory for the team.

Girls Varsity Squash is back in action on Wednesday, 2/8 as they travel to The Holy Child School and Boys Varsity play Thursday, 2/9 at New Canaan Country Day School.

Both teams will then compete in Nationals which start on Friday 2/10 and continue through Sunday 2/12.
