The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Basketball team’s perfect season continued this week with two big wins against The Hyde School on Monday, 1/30 and Hopkins School on Thursday, 2/2.
The Storm came out on fire against Hyde and was 21-0 up with just three minutes and seventeen seconds gone on the clock, possibly their best start to a game this campaign. They would continue to dominate the Wolfpack on their way to an 82-37 victory.
The BVB squad was equally impressive in their second game of the week, a road trip to FAA rivals Hopkins, where they once again controlled the game from start to finish for a comfortable 63-40 win.
The two wins improved their overall record to 14-0 and their FAA record to 9-0 with just six games remaining in the regular season.
The team has been extremely entertaining to watch and have a wealth of talent led by captains Walter Whyte ‘17 and Colin Meany ‘17.
According to Head Coach Drew Gladstone, it is not just the talent on show that has seen the team remain unbeaten so far: “A lot of teams will wait until playoffs or big games to turn it on but a big point of emphasis for us this season has been to be the best version of ourselves at all times, which includes practices, games, meetings, etc.”
He continued, “I think our guys have really bought into the idea that if you want to end up playing for a championship at the end of the season, you need to be playing at a championship level now. Our senior leaders Walter Whyte, Joel Boyce, Colin Meany, Matthew Lindsay and Porter Bowman have owned that, and the rest of the team have followed.”
A goal for the squad has always been to repeat the success of last year which saw St. Luke’s crowned FAA and New England Champions. Gladstone knows the next few weeks will provide his group with a number of challenges as they have a run of six games in twelve days, including a rescheduled game against an AA team in Masters, CT.
However, the third-year coach remains confident his group will achieve their goals. He said, “I think the next two weeks will be a great test for us. The key thing is for us to stick to our process and focus on one game at a time. Our staff has been great in preparing us for all our opponents and the guys have started to turn a corner in terms of being focused at the right time. We are all excited to finish strong.”
Many of this year’s squad were part of the success in 2016 and the head coach believes they have the drive and the spirit to go all the way: “We are playing for each other, but we are also playing for our seniors, so that should be all the motivation we need.”
The boys are back in action on Saturday, 2/4 at 2pm when they take on Hamden Hall at St. Luke’s before a rematch with Hopkins on Monday, 2/6 at 4:30pm, again at home.
