Learning the Power of Being an Ally
On February 21, St. Luke’s Middle School students participated in the Ally Afternoon workshop where they discussed various ways to be a part of a supportive community. There was an assembly followed by breakout sessions which was modeled after the Upper School ADL (Anti-Defamation League) Names workshop this past fall. Director of Inclusive Excellence and Leadership, Stephanie Bramlett; Director of Character Education, Kate Parker-Burgard; and Assistant Head of the Middle School, Mark Chuhta organized the event but it was the leadership of forty Upper School students who led assembly and discussion groups who made this meaningful afternoon even more impactful.
Through testimonials, skits and discussions, Middle School students were introduced to four social roles: perpetrator, target, bystander and ally. They learned that we have all been each of these roles but it is important to actively try and be allies. The students discussed what makes a strong ally and how to become one. This community-building afternoon left students and faculty with a renewed commitment to support each other.
