CFL: Outward Bound Opportunity

VGP
Past St. Luke’s recipients share how an Outward Bound program taught them lessons in leadership.
From Center for Leadership Director Kate Parker-Burgard:

Walking through mud that’s knee-deep, swimming in the cold waters of Maine, or spending a night on a solo trip in the wilderness may not sound like fun, but when done the right way it can be a life-changing experience. Through the generosity of a SLS alumni parent, Hurricane Island Outward Bound School has partnered with St. Luke’s School to establish the S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award, providing an opportunity for a St. Luke’s ninth grader to attend an Outward Bound program during the summer between their freshman and sophomore years.

On Thursday, our three Klein Leaders talked with the freshmen about their experiences. Recalling their solo trips, rock-climbing challenges, and the enduring friendships that were formed, Finn Regan ‘22, Jack Conti ‘21, and Tasia Courts ‘20, spoke about the challenges, but more importantly, the growth that they experienced because of their participation in the course. They all noted that the program made them more confident and talked about some of the lessons they learned about leadership. Tasia elaborated, “It showed me that the power of mind over matter is real.” Commenting that she’s “not much of an outdoor gal,” she went on to say, “I was able to get through a physical challenge, even though I was unsure of myself. I needed to push myself and Outward Bound pointed me in the right direction.”

The application link has been sent to ninth graders. Students interested need to submit their application by Monday, February 3.
