Hockey Takes Down King To Clinch Tournament Spot

Daniel Clarke
The St. Luke’s Varsity Hockey Team put in a dominant display to beat local rival King School 2-1, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Stamford Twin Rinks.

The Storm produced arguably its best performance of the season in a must-win game to secure the number four seed for the upcoming FAA Tournament.

St. Luke’s started well and controlled the opening exchanges, outshooting the Vikings 10-1 in the first period, but couldn’t find a way past the impressive King goaltender.

The Vikings looked like more of a threat in the second period and edged ahead with 7:29 to go before the interval. However, the Storm responded well and tied up the game with less than a minute to play in the period when Henry Robb ‘22 converted from a Lars Ernberg ‘20 assist.

In the final third of the game, both teams went in search of the winning goal, but it was St. Luke’s who found the breakthrough. Max Gifford ‘20 slotted home with 6:45 to play after some great work by George Foster ‘23. St. Luke’s had to survive a late onslaught from the Vikings, with Matthew DellaRusso ‘23 coming up big in goal with 10 saves.

Captain Lars Ernberg was thrilled with the victory and the team’s performance: “This was a real team effort and everyone played their part. We knew the importance of the game, so this was definitely the biggest win of the season to date. The support from our student section made it a great atmosphere to play in, and we used that energy throughout the game. We hope to take the momentum into the tournament next week, but know it’s going to be a tough game against Rye.”

The Storm now hosts the semi-final match at Sono Ice House against number one seed Rye Country Day on Thursday, Feb. 27. Puck drops at 2:50pm.
