Jay Blau Receives Ed Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award

The 2020 Ed Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award went to St. Luke’s Middle School math teacher Jay Blau. This award is given to a Middle School teacher who inspires students to fulfill their potential. This teacher must demonstrate a deep commitment to and affection for students and possess a distinctive style and approach to teaching.

Head of Middle School Amber Berry shared these comments and presented the award to this year’s recipient during this week’s Middle School Town Meeting:

After a successful career in advertising, Mr. Scovner taught seventh and eighth grade English at St Luke's and coached both the boys' basketball and baseball teams. His dual love of the English language and sports, combined with his distinctive teaching style — half drill sergeant and half Mr. Chips — to inspire both his students and his athletes to achieve a higher level of understanding and commitment.

This award goes to the Middle School teacher who has most inspired students to fulfill their individual potentials through the teacher’s commitment, deep affection for students, and most importantly, distinctive style and approach to teaching.
