St. Luke’s Faculty Dedicates Summer to Hybrid Teaching Expertise

SA
This summer, 90 faculty members at St. Luke’s School, along with Head of School Mark Davis participated in the course “Designing, Building, and Teaching for Hybrid Learning” provided by a nationally recognized leader in hybrid and online teaching, One Schoolhouse. This program trains teachers in the essentials of hybrid course design, development, and facilitation, equipping St. Luke’s teachers with the skills to go above and beyond for their students as we enact the SLSReady Reopening Plan

Throughout the summer, teachers learned how to build student courses that pivot smoothly between in-person and online, and a mix of the two to continue providing a best-in-class education in this new world. This style of course design ensures that students can engage in rich material whether they are in the classroom or at home. It also provides St. Luke’s and its students with an advantage no matter the changing health conditions or what other schools choose to do. Ultimately, it further aids our promise to offer families choice (between on campus and online), flexibility (the ability to change their choice day-to-day) and consistency (a school schedule that remains the same in person or online.)

In addition to course design, faculty learned how to best-leverage technology for active learning. One way that St. Luke’s has further implemented technology into this year’s school experience is by investing in the best cameras, microphones and distance learning tools available to equip classrooms. Our school’s Academic Technology Team researched and tested for months to find equipment that will provide equitable access to St. Luke’s exceptional education. This technology allows students who are unable to come to campus—for whatever reason—the ability to connect into classrooms in real-time.

While things will certainly look different as we start a new school year, St. Luke's staff has shown nothing but dedication to ensure that our students and families continue receiving exceptional education and enjoy their time on the Hilltop, and off.

“Each teacher is doing everything we can to make the student experience intuitive (so it’s easy to navigate), connected (so it fosters a sense of belonging), and engaging (so students feel motivated to learn.) Every SLS teacher knows how to do that under ordinary conditions; this course and these expectations ensure we all know how to do it under extraordinary conditions.” —Liz Perry, Head of Upper School
