"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” —William Shakespeare’s As You Like It
St. Luke’s students were indeed players on the stage they created, as they acted out scenes from Hamlet during Ms. Doran’s Shakespeare class. Ms. Doran has been the facilitator of this elective for more than two decades, and as she said, “maintains that ‘the play’s the thing’ and the page must inevitably become the stage.”
Susan Doran shared the following about this year’s class.
This marks the 21st year of the Shakespeare elective for seniors at St. Luke's, a seminar based on a deep read of Hamlet, Othello and King Lear, with an occasional nod to the ill-tempered Richard III. Inspired by the ”words, words, words” of the Bard, students write analytically and creatively, view productions on stage and screen, and perform both cold and practiced reads of key scenes in the tragedies.
These photos reflect the most recent production of Queen Gertrude's "closet" scene, and Ophelia's mad turn — acted and directed by the seniors with intent, commitment, and a theatrical flair for academic fun (not an oxymoron!). The course traditionally culminates in Sonnets and Sweets, a recitation of the poems held in my home, with cheesecakes by Iago and sparkling cider by the melancholy Dane himself. Inspired by the resurgence of theatre in London's plague years, the class will re-imagine this tradition in January. Until then, we will 'Keep calm and carry on' with joy.
