Boys Varsity Squash: Season Outlook

As the St. Luke's School boys squash team gears up for the upcoming season, Head Coach Brian Mathias is excited to see what his group of players can achieve.

Preseason has set a solid foundation for the team, with a strong turnout and competitive varsity tryouts. Overcoming the rust from the off-season has been a primary focus, with special attention given to integrating new varsity team members. Team captains, Peter Lewis ’24 and Jack Lyons ’24, are expected to provide essential leadership, fostering cohesion, discipline, and accountability among the players.

Mathias said: "Early standouts include Chris Corcoran and Jack Clavelli, both making the first-round cuts for varsity. Lewis, returning from soccer season, has shown exceptional fitness and skill. Stuart Upson has trained extensively in the offseason, positioning himself for significant strides.”

The Storm has seen a significant turnover in the roster due to graduations and injuries but Mathias aims to build team dynamics and foster a strong team culture: “The goal is not only to navigate this season but also to prepare for future challenges as more seniors graduate. The team aims to develop experience, adapt to higher levels of competition, and set individual goals for improvement.”

Coach Mathias expects his players to continue to develop as the season progresses and has a focus on individual and team improvement: “I expect the team to play with dedication every day in both practice and game environments. Beyond immediate results, players are encouraged to approach each match with an agenda for progression in their skills and overall game."

St. Luke’s opened the season with a convincing win against Canterbury School before a tough loss to Rye High School. Mathias believes the two matches show they are ready to compete this year: "These early contests provided valuable insights into the team's readiness for the increased competition. The biggest challenges lie in league play against formidable opponents, especially considering the loss of key players from the previous season. Teams like Brunswick, perennial FAA champions, and Rye Country Day, a top-20 finisher nationally, pose significant tests. Navigating these challenges will require determination, teamwork, and a commitment to improvement."

The St. Luke’s boys varsity squash team returned from Winter Break and succumbed to a tough 2-5 loss at Greens Farms Academy on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The team next takes to the courts on Tuesday, Jan. 9 against The Masters School (NY).
