Two Eighth-Graders Accepted Into Manhattan School of Music’s Summer Institute
S.A.
Manhattan School of Music, one of the leading music conservatories in the world, hosts a Summer Jazz Institute for student musicians. This year, two St. Luke’s eighth-graders, George Geist and Robert Lang, were accepted into the Summer Jazz Institute. George will attend for the first time, and Rob will return for the second summer in a row.
When reflecting on his time in the program, Rob shared, “I am super excited! At MSM, you learn and go in-depth on topics you may not learn otherwise — for example, music theory and classic jazz. Music theory is a very hard concept to learn on your own, and having professional players teach you these challenging courses is a very special opportunity. I’m excited to learn about classic jazz and jazz players this summer. We have over two hours each day learning about old jazz "cats" and trying to imitate their playing style. The program is a huge opportunity to learn from older kids who have played their entire lives and professionals who know everything about music. From the three weeks in the summer program last year, I transformed myself into a whole new player.”
