S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award 2015

Valerie Parker
Claire Wilson ‘18 won the Center For Leadership’s third annual S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award.  This competition, only open to ninth graders, recognizes students with strong character and leadership potential. Claire will participate in a paid three-week program at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS) which uses wilderness expeditions to hone teamwork and leadership skills.

Applicants answered a series of written questions and were interviewed by a St. Luke’s selection committee. Center For Leadership Director Jim Foley said, “It was a difficult decision as we had many strong applicants. Claire will bring to HIOBS a combination of self-awareness, instinct, and a willingness to act that is sure to powerfully impact our School’s community." Claire knows it will be a big challenge: “I decided the course would be a great opportunity to find my voice.  Last year’s winner, Kelly McKenna gave a great meditation about her experience and that inspired me. I hope to gain confidence as a leader that I can take back to the St. Luke’s community.”

The S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award sponsor, Brad Klein, a former St. Luke’s parent and trustee, attended Outward Bound as a youth, as did daughter Charlotte.  Previous recipients include Hank Ferris ‘16 and Kelly McKenna ‘17. Hank spoke with ninth graders during the application time and told them, “It will change your life.”
