St. Luke’s Math Team has qualified to compete in the Connecticut State Mathematics League Tournament in Hamden, CT on April 2. St. Luke’s’ combined team score earned the team a spot among the schools representing the Fairfield County Math League.
Team scores are compiled from six matches in the regular season which takes place October through March. Each match has 6 rounds and a team round. An “A team” consists of 6 members (no more than 3 seniors and 2 juniors). Each round will have 3 team members compete individually and each member will go in for exactly 3 rounds throughout the season. All six members working collectively play the team round.

The SLS Math Team was started four years ago by senior Casey Zhu. While touring St. Luke’s as a prospective student, Casey, then an 8th grader, asked if St. Luke’s had a math team. He had been a member of his middle school’s math team and was hopeful he could continue to compete. Upper School math teacher Corliss Spencer overheard Casey’s question as he and his student tour guide walked past her classroom. Ms. Spencer answered, “No, St. Luke’s doesn’t have a math team—yet.” Upon entering SLS as a freshman, Casey initiated the School’s first Math Team and has been the captain all four years—sharing that responsibility with Khush Dhaliwal over the last two years. Casey was the team high scorer for three years in a row. Khush was the team high scorer this year.
The Math Team practices regularly twice each week during lunch period. Practices also take place outside of school when regular practice days are preempted by a holiday or snow day. “A” and “B” team members practice together—Only “A” Team members compete but and the B Team can compete in meets for practice.
Leading the team into their first State competition, Casey feels the team has momentum. “Seeing as we placed in the top half of our league this season, after only four years of competing as a team, I feel we have a good chance of doing well against schools like ours.” During State tournaments, teams are grouped according to school size, not according to prior scores. FCML league includes large schools like Greenwich High School and Staples High School. St. Luke’s will be competing against smaller, same-sized schools. “We started out small our first year. Fortunately, we were joined this year by a few more upperclassmen and a great group of eager freshman who really enjoy math.”
On April 2, armed with some plain paper, a pencil or pen, St. Luke’s Math Team will make their mathematical mark. Congratulations and good luck!
