Bramlett & Griffa Lead Statewide Diversity Conference

As commissioners of the Connecticut Commission on Diversity in Independent Schools, Diversity Director Dr. Stephanie Bramlett and Upper School Music Chair Dale Griffa, helped organize this year’s Connecticut Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), held at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford.

The SDLC took place April 12, 2015, and brought together more than five hundred student and faculty participants from independent schools across the state. “The theme was ‘One of Us = All of Us’” said Bramlett. The goal: to have an in-depth conversation about issues facing students and communities, including diversity, inclusivity, and other social justice matters.

Bramlett spent several months developing the curriculum and trained all the student facilitators. Sixteen St. Luke’s students joined Bramlett, Griffa, and Community Life Associate Noel Thomas at the conference. Liz Kremer ’15, Georgia Nelson ’17, Clare Armstrong ‘17, Kelly Adams ‘17, Gabby Finley ‘17, and Jack Hobbs ‘17 joined other young advocates to act as facilitators, leading important activities and conversations with fellow students. Georgia Nelson spoke about her experience: “Hearing students engage in conversations allowed me to observe the learning process of social justice work from a new perspective.” Clare Armstrong added: “SDLC fosters unity among all students, and a sense of safety and comfort for everyone who attends.”
