St. Luke's Closet: Sharing and Wearing

VGP
For four summers, St. Luke’s parent and student volunteers have run the ever-growing St. Luke’s Closet—a free dress code recycling program. This ambitious project is spearheaded by St. Luke’s parent, Holly Kennedy who works throughout the year collecting and organizing the various items. “We realized it was a great way for SLS families to donate gently-used dress code clothing and share it with the community” says Kennedy. “Not only are those receiving the clothes happy, but those who donate feel good too.”

So many families give quite generously according to Kennedy. Donations rose from approximately 1000 pieces last year to about 1,500 this summer, and an “adult size” section was added. Each year, many items remain after the Closet is closed. Kennedy gives this clothing to various local schools and organizations in need. Even the clothing that doesn’t comply with the SLS dress code is put to good use. These items were given to a local resident who shipped the clothing to refugees in the Ukraine.

The St. Luke’s Closet is only open through next Friday, August 28. It is located in Room 324 and open 8:30am-4pm, 7 days a week. Donations are still being accepted (just leave in the box at the entrance to the Room 324) and throughout the year at Holly Kennedy’s home at 36 Lukes Wood Road, New Canaan.
