In June, Middle School science teacher David Havens received the Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award. This award goes to a Middle School teacher who inspires students to fulfill their potential. This teacher demonstrates deep commitment and affection for students, and most importantly, has a distinctive style and approach to teaching.
Head of the Middle School Gareth Fancher has this to say about Havens receiving the award: “David Havens is described by students as tough, really nice, smart, someone who knows a lot of things, experienced, selfless, caring, and always willing to help. He gives his time liberally in the classroom, on the playing fields, and beyond the school community. With a true project-based approach to teaching, and a passion for exploration, discovery, and endless possibilities, people often describe this teacher as a blend of Ms. Frizzle, Captain Planet, and Neil deGrasse Tyson...Science oozes from every crevice of his classroom, where one may find students engaged in Lincoln-Douglas formal debate, planting seedlings in the hydroponic garden, making hand lotion or ice cream, taking off in Spaceship Earth, singing ‘I am the Walrus’, sharing their environmental autobiographies, or readying themselves for an outdoor hike on the nature trails he built.”
Congratulations to David Havens on this much-deserved teaching award.
Past recipients of this award include English teacher Jim Carroll (2014) and 5th grade teacher Melissa Zurkowski (2013).
