Theater Arts

The Theater Arts program at St. Luke’s School offers an eclectic mix of opportunities for both the serious student of drama and the student whose interest has just been piqued. Introductory acting classes offer students the opportunity to play typical improvisational games while simultaneously being exposed to techniques that heighten the actor’s spatial awareness, kinesthetic response, and impulsivity. Design classes help students gain technical skills in theatre production including an understanding of lighting, sound, and set design. More advanced classes and independent studies provide means for students to explore the skills they have learned in introductory classes and to execute those acting and design techniques in fully produced productions in our Black Box Theater. The St. Luke’s Theater Arts program aims to facilitate students to “step into themselves,” to awaken their artistic passions, and to provide the means to help students take in the world around them by “listening with the ear of their heart.” At the core of the theatre program is a very vibrant, professional, exciting theatrical season. The St. Luke’s theatre program produces material that aims to affect social change and serve to enlighten, inspire, and entertain. Our productions have been honored by the Connecticut Halo Awards and have been invited to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
  • Theater Design: Lighting & Sound

This is a project-based course that serves as an introduction to theater for students interested in sound and lighting design. Students learn the basics of lighting design theory, get hands-on experience with lighting equipment common in most professional theaters, and receive training on our ETC Ion lighting console. They also learn how to organize a light plot, and how to cue a show. The sound design unit focuses on producing a radio drama. Students record peers, create foley sound effects, and in the process learn how to edit with Logic Pro while getting familiar with our Yamaha CL5 mixing console. Together we read scripts, conceptualize, research, and present work to others outside of the class. There is no prerequisite for the class, although experience in the Tech Theater after school activity is helpful.
Note: this course is offered every other year and will be offered again during the 2023-2024 school year, based on enrollment.
